Bears HC Matt Eberflus addresses questions about Caleb Williams' character

Individuals within the Chicago Bears are doing a good job of hiding it if they truly have any concerns about supposed red flags hovering over the status of USC Trojans star quarterback Caleb Williams this spring.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus spoke with reporters at the NFL owners meetings on Tuesday, addressing what he saw of Williams during USC's pro day last week.

"What I loved to see was the interaction with the other players," Eberflus said, per Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times."You can see that, and we talked to every person that was on that team. At the Senior Bowl, we interviewed them — and interviewed them at the pro day. We talked to those guys at the dinner and you can certainly see those players love him and respect him — and what he’s brought to that program."

Ryan Taylor of NBC Sports Chicago mentioned in February how questions about Williams' character and leadership style arose during the signal-caller's final college season. More recently, veteran offensive tackle and three-time Pro Bowl selection Taylor Lewan generated headlines when he said he "did not get a good vibe from" Williams after the quarterback completed no medical evaluations at the combine in Indianapolis. Chicago cornerback Jaylon Johnson later warned Williams to not "bring that Hollywood stuff into the building."

Bears general manager Ryan Poles sounded unconcerned when he praised Williams' relationships with his USC teammates and the quarterback's leadership on Monday. Eberflus seemed pleased with what he learned while speaking with Williams for roughly "80 minutes or so" last week.

"Just really hearing his journey — his journey from being a little guy," Eberflus said about that conversation. "What I gleaned from that is how his mother and father love him very much. Very supportive. You could see his character, his football character there, his football knowledge as I talk through that. It was a really good visit."

Mock drafts updated each week continue to predict that the Bears will make Williams the first pick of this year's draft following the club's trade of Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Williams could cement his status as the No. 1 overall choice when he visits Chicago next week. Finley shared that the Bears "plan to continue teaching [Williams] their offense" at that time.
