Jaguars tease return of popular throwback uniforms

The Jaguars don’t have a long uniform history to pull throwbacks from like many franchises that have been around since the 1930s. Jacksonville was one of the last two expansion teams to enter the league in 1995 along with the Carolina Panthers. Now, though, nearly 30 years after the organization played its first NFL game, the fans are ready for the nostalgia.

The early years in Jacksonville

Coming into the NFL in 1995, the Jaguars made three smart moves with their first coach hire, first draft pick, and first trade.

They started by hiring an up-and-coming college coach from Boston College, Tom Coughlin. Then, the team drafted a future Hall of Fame left tackle, Tony Boselli, with the No. 2 overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft. Finally, with its first trade, Jacksonville sent a third and a fifth-round pick to the Green Bay Packers for their 1993 fifth-round pick, quarterback Mark Brunell.

These three moves didn’t pay off in year one, as the team went 4-12 in its inaugural campaign. However, the next season, the group started to gel, going 9-7 and making the playoffs in just its second season. That squad made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game before losing to the New England Patriots.

From there, Coughlin and the Jaguars ripped off three more consecutive playoff appearances, going a combined 22-10 in 1998 and 1999 to win their division. In ’99, the team again made the AFC Championship, this time losing to the Tennessee Titans one step shy of the Super Bowl.

Unfortunately for Jaguars fans, the team fell off after that, and have only made the playoffs four times in the next 24 years.

Jaguars uniform history

While three decades is a decent sample size, the Jaguars have been relatively steady with their uniforms over the years.

The helmets have almost always been black with the gold-ish Jaguar head on it, save for the few seasons in the 2010s where they went to a two-tone black and gold helmet. As for the uniforms themselves, they started with just teal and white jerseys, adding a black one in 2002 to go with either white or black pants.

In the two-tone helmet era, the team also added gold uniforms as alternates.

The recent Jaguars post that teased the throwbacks for 2024 did not specify exactly what the new/old jerseys will be this season, but with the full-length Jaguar at the end of the video, it’s likely that the team goes back to the mid-90s version which featured that logo in the shoulders.
